Mbekezeli Mbokazi Bids Farewell to Orlando Pirates After Carling Knockout Triumph

Orlando Pirates vice-captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi played his final game for the club on Saturday, helping the Buccaneers secure a 1-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at the Peter Mokaba Stadium to lift the Carling Knockout Cup. The match marked a bittersweet moment for Pirates fans as Mbokazi prepares to join Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer after the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

After the game, Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou spoke to the media about Mbokazi’s departure. He drew parallels between Mbokazi’s career path and his own experience as a young player in Europe.

“I was in his position when I was 22 years old at Nancy, my former club. I was developed there for four years, played two years in the first division, and then had the opportunity to move to the Premier League at Fulham. It’s the evolution. I just want to wish him good luck. All the best for him,” Ouaddou said.

The coach praised Mbokazi’s professionalism, highlighting his focus on the team’s success even in his final game. “I told him before that game, ‘you need to put the team in the first place on the log and to win that trophy. And nobody can speak because you did your job.’ And the guy did his job,” Ouaddou added.

Ouaddou also emphasized the importance of Mbokazi remembering his roots, both with Orlando Pirates and the South African national team, Bafana Bafana. “He’s going to the US. We hope he continues to improve, keeps evaluating himself, and never forgets Orlando Pirates or the national team. It’s not because you go to the US that you stop improving. Think of Orlando Pirates and your nation, very important,” he said.

Mbokazi, who has been a key figure in Pirates’ midfield, is expected to join Chicago Fire after representing South Africa at the upcoming AFCON. His departure closes a significant chapter in Pirates’ recent history, during which the club has maintained strong domestic performances, including multiple trophy wins.

Fans will remember Mbokazi for his leadership, consistency, and dedication to the Buccaneers. His next challenge in the MLS offers an opportunity to showcase his talent on a new stage while continuing to represent South Africa internationally.
