MC Alger and Saint Eloi Lupopo Set for Crucial CAF Champions League Clashes

MC Alger and Saint Eloi Lupopo enter a decisive phase in the CAF Champions League. Rulani Mokwena’s side will face Lupopo in back to back fixtures that can reshape Group C. Both clubs sit on one point after two matches. Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Hilal lead the group with four points each.

The next two matchdays will influence the direction of the group. Sundowns will meet Al Hilal twice. MC Alger will face Lupopo in two straight fixtures that carry high stakes for all four clubs. Each team targets a top two finish. Every point now matters because the gap between the sides is small and the group remains open.

Lupopo improved their position with a draw against Al Hilal. Al Hilal beat MC Alger earlier in the group. The result gave the Congolese side a lifeline as they prepare for their meetings with Mokwena’s team.

Former Lupopo coach Luc Eymael shared his view on the contests. He said Lupopo struggle with defensive consistency. He pointed to last season’s record when his team kept several clean sheets. He said the current side concedes similar goals due to the structure of a back three. He said this system may not suit the players.

Eymael said Lupopo were poor in the first half against Al Hilal but improved after several substitutions. He said they pushed forward more in the second half but lacked precision in the final third. They scored from a rebound instead of a clean attacking move.

Eymael noted that the next two matches against MC Alger will be important because both teams have the same number of points. He said playing the first meeting at home gives Lupopo a chance to influence the standings.

He also raised concerns about Lupopo’s technical structure during matches. Their head coach is suspended for the group stage. Eymael said this is a serious disadvantage at continental level. He said that during matches he saw several members of the technical team instructing players at the same time. He warned that this can create confusion in a competition where clarity and structure are vital.

MC Alger will look to capitalise on recent improvements under Mokwena. Lupopo will try to fix defensive issues and find stability. The two meetings will test both squads. The results will determine who keeps pace with the leaders and who loses ground in the race for the knockout phase.
