Orlando Pirates Poised for Title Challenge, Says Gavin Hunt

Four-time PSL-winning coach Gavin Hunt believes Orlando Pirates have the tools to compete for the Betway Premiership this season. He pointed to their squad depth and absence from continental competitions as key advantages over defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
Hunt highlighted the sustained quality of the Buccaneers’ squad over the last few campaigns. He said their bench strength allows the team to change games late, a factor few other clubs can match.
“The Pirates squad the last three years has huge impact players. That makes a difference. They are not playing in Africa, which I think is a big plus for them,” Hunt said.
He added that players coming off the bench, such as Oswin Appollis, can decisively influence matches. Hunt said having some of the country’s best talent available late in games gives Pirates an edge. He also pointed to the team’s pace and speed, which he believes troubles opponents.
While Hunt did not predict a winner, he noted that Sundowns face unique pressures. Their focus on the CAF Champions League could affect league performance. Hunt suggested the title race might be closer than in previous seasons due to these factors.
“I’m not saying who will win, but their squad is very strong. Sundowns’ focus has always been more on Champions League. It could be closer than anything before this year,” Hunt concluded.
Pirates’ depth, speed, and ability to rotate high-quality players may prove decisive as the season progresses. Their absence from continental football allows them to concentrate fully on domestic success, giving them a clear pathway to challenge for the title.
