Miguel Cardoso Reflects on High Standards as Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach Approaches One-Year Mark

Miguel Cardoso is approaching his first year as head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, a period marked by high expectations and scrutiny. Under his leadership, Sundowns have secured a spot in the group stage of the CAF Champions League this season, though not without challenges that required explanation.

Cardoso has overseen 53 matches with 33 wins, a record that highlights both consistency and the pressure that comes with coaching one of South Africa’s top clubs. Speaking about the expectations, he acknowledged the difficulty of balancing results and perception.

“There is a conception that a team that reaches the final of the Champions League and is not able to win it, fails,” he said. “I have another perspective. We succeeded in going to the final but didn’t reach the best desire that we had, which was to win, and that is why we deal with emotions that we don’t get over.”

He emphasized the importance of perspective. “Everybody had so much expectations, and I understand it, but we should never allow that to make us smaller than we really are and not praise that we reach the final and moved up the CAF rankings. Sometimes you look at the empty side of the bottle and sometimes at the full side, and I like to look at both because I don’t want to lose the ambition.”

Cardoso highlighted the challenge of managing emotions as a coach. “If I put myself under emotions that are too negative, I will not get the right position as a coach to keep giving energy to my players towards the objectives that we have,” he said.

He also addressed the persistent scrutiny from critics and high standards set for Sundowns. “It seems like it is never enough. When we win five, it seems the guys (opponents) are weak. It is never enough, and it seems there are always very high standards towards us. But it is good. It means that people believe in what we do. It means the standards have been put very high.”

Reflecting on periods of difficulty, including post-Club World Cup challenges, Cardoso praised the commitment of his team and staff. “The work of people here is very serious, very strong, very committed, and that is the way we see the development of the team. I expect the team to grow… whether it will be the best or not the best has to do with the commitment that we have towards the objectives in terms of behaviour on the pitch, but fluctuations in performance will always happen.”

He concluded with a focus on consistent results. “What we have to do is get the results one after the other, and that is the focus that the team has. We know that the expectations regarding ourselves and our job are very high.”

As Cardoso nears his one-year mark, his reflections underscore a coach aware of both pressures and opportunities. His emphasis on perspective, ambition, and steady progress indicates a measured approach to sustaining Sundowns’ high standards while navigating the intense scrutiny that comes with success.
