Mngqithi Reacts To Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mnqithi has broken silence on Prince Mangosuthu Legacy Cup that will be returning on July 23. The last time the competition played was in 2018 with Sundowns lifting it but in the following year, football was hit by Covid 19 pandemic and the tournament was then distracted.

This is a pre-season tournament to honour Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi and will take place at Prince Mangosuthu Stadium in Ulundi. Mamelodi Sundowns, Richards Bay, Zululand District and AmaZulu are the invited teams and were drawn for semi-finals.

Masandawana coach Mnqithi says they won’t take this cup for granted. “We would like to first appreciate this initiative from the leadership of the Zululand district, we appreciate being invited to a tournament of this magnitude.

“You could’ve chosen so many other teams but you chose Sundowns and we are not taking this tournament for granted. We really appreciate any given match that we get in preparation for the season and we know very well that normally we struggle to get friendlies around this time,” said Mngqithi.

“Our wish is, as much as we are the current cup holders, we are not too keen on winning the Cup, but we are keen on making sure that we play two matches.

“There has to be somebody who gives us the opportunity to play the second match. From our side we have to make sure that the players that we are bringing on the day are able to play two matches so that both teams can get minutes on their legs on that day and that can only happen if we give ourselves the chance to go play in the final,” he added.

PLAYERS LINKED WITH SUNDOWNS

Bafana Bastyle are believed to have launched a bid for free agent Bongani Zungu who left Amiens SC at the end of this past season. The Brazilians are also reportedly looking to sign Ronwen Williams of SuperSport as he made it clear that he’d like to move from the childhood club. He also added that he would like to win the league which makes it vivid that Sundowns are likely to be his next destination.

Soccer Laduma reported that Downs are close to concluding a swap deal that would see Williams joining them while Ricardo Goss goes in the opposite direction. It has also been reported that Downs are chasing the signature of Cape Town City’s Thabo Nodada
