Nasreddine Nabi’s Goalkeeper Request Forces Kaizer Chiefs Into Tough Transfer Puzzle

Kaizer Chiefs are facing a complex off-season dilemma in the goalkeeping department following a specific request from newly appointed coach Nasreddine Nabi. As the Soweto giants prepare for a crucial rebuilding phase, the Tunisian tactician has made it clear that he wants a new goalkeeper ahead of the 2025/26 campaign — a move that could result in the departure of Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari.

Nabi, who is already making his mark at Naturena, is set on reshaping the squad to align with his vision. He has reportedly requested that only two of the five foreign players who finished last season under his watch be retained — Congolese winger Glody Makabi Lilepo and Angolan-born Inacio Miguel. With Mozambican defender Edmilson Dove already confirmed to be leaving at the end of June, and Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo facing an uncertain future, Ntwari is now the most likely foreign casualty in the goalkeeping unit.

The Rwandan shot-stopper struggled for consistent form last season, conceding 11 goals in just seven appearances and not featuring in a competitive match for over seven months. This lack of game time, combined with his status as a foreign player, puts him in a difficult position, especially as Nabi looks to free up international slots to accommodate new signings.

Chiefs still have Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen in their goalkeeping ranks, both of whom are expected to remain. But with Ntwari occupying a precious foreign slot and not commanding the No.1 jersey, Nabi has made it clear he wants someone else between the posts — a keeper of his own choosing.

Several names have already been linked to the role, including Djigui Diarra from Tanzanian giants Young Africans, highlighting that Nabi has specific profiles in mind as he looks to bolster the position with proven talent.

The challenge, however, lies in offloading Ntwari. The 27-year-old joined from TS Galaxy just last year on a four-year deal with an additional one-year option. With three years left on his contract, Chiefs are now faced with finding a club willing to take him on either a permanent transfer or loan. A contract termination is viewed as a last resort due to the financial burden it would place on the club — especially considering that they paid a transfer fee for him just 12 months ago.

As the new season approaches, Chiefs must act swiftly to resolve the Ntwari conundrum. Only once that space is freed can Nabi bring in his desired goalkeeper and continue shaping the squad to fit his blueprint. The next few weeks could prove pivotal for both player and club as negotiations continue behind the scenes.
