New Bafana Bafana Defender Tylon Smith Opens Up About Emotional National Team Call Up

Tylon Smith shared honest insight into his first Bafana Bafana call up for the Africa Cup of Nations. The 20 year old defender said he felt emotional when he learned he had made Hugo Broos’ squad. He is one of two uncapped players selected for the tournament that starts on 22 December. His reaction showed how much the moment meant after a difficult year.
Smith said he discovered the news while at training. He said he checked Facebook on his phone because he did not have access to SABC 2. He said he heard his name and felt grateful. He thanked the coach for the chance and said the moment reminded him of his background and the challenges he overcame. He said he felt excited when he realised he would join the squad.
He also spoke about his move from Stellenbosch FC to Queens Park Rangers. He said the change did not unsettle him. He said he stayed mentally strong and pushed hard every day. He said he trained with full effort and waited for his opportunity. He said support from people around him helped him stay focused.
Bafana Bafana will face Ghana on 16 December in Gauteng as part of their preparation. The team will travel to Morocco on 17 December. Smith aims to earn his place and continue the hard work that brought him to this stage.
