Orlando Pirates Striker Tshegofatso Mabasa Aims to Make Club History Before AFCON 2025

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa has set himself an ambitious target for the 2025/26 season—one that could etch his name forever in the club’s history books. Mabasa is determined to become Pirates’ all-time top scorer by December this year, before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) kicks off in Morocco.
Currently sitting on 47 goals, Mabasa is closing in on the legendary Benedict Vilakazi’s record of 58 goals for the Buccaneers. Confident and unphased by the pressure that comes with such a bold declaration, Mabasa believes the milestone is well within reach.
“I am looking to have a big season, this season. I think I am 10 or 11 goals away. I want to achieve that record before AFCON starts. In August, we have five games, six with the MTN8, so I don’t see why not,” Mabasa told the media.
Speaking candidly about handling pressure, Mabasa added,
“The older I get, the less I worry about pressure. I no longer worry about pressure. You can’t perform well with pressure.”
The Pirates squad has welcomed several new signings ahead of their pre-season tour of Spain, and Mabasa is optimistic about how these additions will impact the team’s performance.
“I think the trip to Spain gave us an opportunity to integrate them, away from all the noise in the country. For us to be away worked quite well because you can see how they performed even in the friendly games. You look at Mbule, for example, his performances in the friendly games. You look at Appollis as well. Now it’s just for them to come back home and do it here. We believe in them and they have our support,” Mabasa said.
With a blend of experience, fresh talent, and Mabasa’s clear hunger for goals, Orlando Pirates fans have every reason to be excited for the new season. If Mabasa stays on track, he will not only lead the line but also make history by becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer—a feat that would cement his legacy among the Buccaneers’ greats.
