Nkanyiso Shinga’s Debut Wait at Kaizer Chiefs Extends Beyond Six Months

Nkanyiso Shinga’s difficult start at Kaizer Chiefs has stretched into a long and frustrating wait. The defender has spent more than six months at the club without making a single appearance. His situation raises concerns about his form, fitness and future impact at Naturena.

Chiefs signed Shinga during the off-season after he spent seven years in Portugal. He played in the top flight for CF Estrela Amadora, then featured for FC Alverca and SC Covilha in the lower divisions. His time in Portugal gave him steady minutes. He played regularly at left-back and helped Alverca win promotion to the top tier before leaving for South Africa.

His move to Chiefs was expected to give the team more depth on the left side of defence. Instead, the transition has been difficult. Chiefs have already played 20 matches across all competitions. Shinga has only appeared on the bench once, during the CAF Confederation Cup meeting with Kabuscorp. He has not been included in the match-day squad for the other fixtures.

The first six months of his four-year deal have produced no returns. His absence from the pitch has also affected his visibility to the Bafana Bafana technical team. Regular minutes are essential for any player hoping to break into the national setup.

Injuries have slowed his progress. Once fit, he found himself behind Bradley Cross and Paseka Mako in the left-back rankings. Aden McCarthy has also shown he can cover the position, which adds more competition. Shinga now faces the challenge of regaining sharpness while also proving he can outperform players who have been active all season.

His target is to be ready when domestic football resumes after the six-week break. The restart offers a second chance to push for selection. Chiefs still have at least 22 matches left this season. Strong training sessions and improved fitness could help him climb the depth chart.

Ethan Chislett faces a similar struggle. He arrived after spending most of his career in the English lower leagues. He has also found the adjustment tougher than expected.

Chiefs co coach Khalil Ben Youssef recently acknowledged the size and depth of the squad. He said the technical team monitors training closely to identify who is most prepared for each match. His comments underline the competitive environment at Naturena. Every player must earn their place through consistency and readiness.

Shinga now enters a critical phase of the season. His opportunities will depend on his ability to stay fit, raise his level and convince the coaches he can add value. The next few months will determine whether he can secure a role in the team and revive his hopes of national recognition.
