On the 16th of April 1986, the Whites won 5-1 at the Bernabéu on the way to the final they would ultimately go on and win

Today marks 34 years since one of Real Madrid’s greatest European comebacks. On the 16th of April 1986, the Santiago Bernabéu was hosting Inter Milan in the second leg of the UEFA Cup semi-finals, with the home team having lost 3-1 away in the first leg. The Whites had to turn the scores around if they were to go on and retain the title and the madridista stadium again played a vital role.

The game looked to be going the home side’s way, when Hugo Sáchez converted from the spot to make it 1-0 on the stroke of half-time. The madridistas continued to press on and with 64 on the clock, they found a second goal, thanks to a Gordillo header. Madridismo’s joy was short-lived though, as Brady made no mistake from 12 yards just two minutes later to make it.

Closing stages and extra-time
Hugo Sánchez netted the third penalty of the match to bring the tie level on aggregate at 3-1 in the 74th minute. That result saw the game head into extra-time, where Santillana would go on to net twice and become the hero on the night. The first was a towering header from a 93rd-minute corner, and the second a nice finish to a swift counter-attack (108’) to bring the final score to 5-1.

A second UEFA Cup
It was the second year in a row Real Madrid had come from behind at the Bernabéu to eliminate Inter Milan, having run out 3-0 winners in Madrid the previous year, following a 2-0 loss in the first leg. In the 1986 competition, the Whites went on to lift their second UEFA Cup, beating Cologne in a two-legged final (5-1 at the Bernabéu; 2-0 in Germany).
