Orlando Pirates Confident of Defensive Stability Despite Mbokazi’s MLS Move

Orlando Pirates have confirmed that rising star Mbekezeli “TLB” Mbokazi will join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire in early 2026, following a successful medical and agreement on personal terms. The 20-year-old will remain with the Soweto giants until the final official fixture of 2025, giving him a chance to finish a debut year that has already included silverware and a Bafana Bafana call-up.

The announcement sparked questions about who will fill the void left by Mbokazi. Former Pirates defender Abednego “Tsotsi Number 1” Netshiozwi believes the club’s defence will remain strong despite the youngster’s departure. He highlighted the quality and depth already available at the club.

“Nkosinathi Sibisi and Lebone Seema are still there, and those are the two centre-backs who have been playing regularly this season alongside Mbokazi. I don’t see any problem or any challenges caused by his departure,” Netshiozwi said. He also pointed to the return of Thabiso Sesane from injury and Olisa Ndah, noting that both players were performing well before injuries interrupted their campaigns.

Netshiozwi praised Pirates for allowing Mbokazi to pursue the overseas opportunity, saying it reflects the club’s long-standing tradition of supporting young talent in taking big steps abroad. He cited previous landmark moves, including Mbulelo ‘OJ’ Mabizela’s transfer to Europe in the early 2000s, as evidence of Pirates’ commitment to player development and career growth.

“For me, Pirates made the right decision. You don’t want to hold back a young player who could become frustrated if an overseas opportunity passes him by. Pirates have always supported players taking big steps abroad,” he said.

As the club prepares for life after Mbokazi, the defensive line appears well-equipped to maintain stability. Sibisi, Seema, Sesane, and Ndah possess the experience, tactical understanding, and familiarity with the team’s system to ensure continuity.

Mbokazi’s upcoming move to Chicago Fire represents a major milestone in a career that is only just beginning. For Pirates, the focus will shift to maintaining defensive solidity while continuing to nurture the next generation of talent ready to make an impact both domestically and abroad.
