Orlando Pirates’ League Form Signals Strong Title Contention

Orlando Pirates’ current pace in the Betway Premiership has positioned them firmly among title contenders, reflecting trends historically associated with league podium finishes since the 1996/97 PSL season. The Buccaneers have collected 25 points from a possible 33, putting them level on points with league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while holding a game in hand over the defending champions.

Under Abdeslam Ouaddou, Pirates have turned their first six months of the season into a period of consistent performance, with a style and points accumulation rate that suggests a strong chance of ending the campaign with silverware. At a 76% points collection rate so far, the Buccaneers are performing at a level traditionally linked with championship success.

Historical data from the past 29 years shows that only five title-winning campaigns exceeded Pirates’ current points-gathering pace. Kaizer Chiefs reached 77% on their way to the 2014/15 title, while Sundowns achieved 79% the following season. In recent years, Sundowns have increased their standards, reaching 78% in the 2022/23 campaign and 81% in their last two title-winning seasons.

For Pirates to match the highest points accumulation of 81%, they would need to drop no more than six points from the remaining 54 on offer. To surpass that and reach 82%, they would require 49 points from the 57 still available. Sundowns have pushed the average points needed to win the league to 73% over the past eight seasons, up from 68% in previous years, raising the benchmark for all challengers.

While the season is only past the one-third mark, Pirates’ strong start and momentum suggest that the title race will largely revolve around the top two teams. Maintaining consistency and capitalizing on their game in hand could see Ouaddou’s side challenge Sundowns directly, with the destination of the league likely shaped by their performance in the remaining fixtures. The Buccaneers’ current form signals not just a podium finish, but a serious title push.
