Orlando Pirates Promote Neo Mokoena Amid Transfer Moves and Youth Strategy

Orlando Pirates are making strategic moves to secure the club’s future, as the Soweto giants continue to show their commitment to youth development. With Mohau Nkota recently finalising a move to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq FC and Relebohile Mofokeng heavily linked with an overseas transfer, the Buccaneers have promoted rising star Neo Mokoena to the senior team.

The promotion of Mokoena was confirmed by his representatives, P Management Sports, on social media. The talented forward has signed his first professional contract with Pirates after impressing in the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC), joining a growing list of academy graduates who have stepped into the first team in recent years.

The timing of Mokoena’s elevation comes as the club prepares for a demanding 2024/25 season that will see them compete in five tournaments: the CAF Champions League, Betway Premiership, MTN8, Nedbank Cup, and Carling Knockout. With Nkota’s departure and the strong possibility of losing Mofokeng during the current transfer window, Pirates appear to be reinforcing their squad by turning to their youth ranks.

Mofokeng, who had a breakout season in 2024/25, made waves during Pirates’ pre-season tour of Spain and received five PSL award nominations, drawing increased attention from overseas clubs. While the club has not confirmed any offers or decisions regarding his future, there is mounting speculation that a deal could be finalised before the window closes.

By bringing Mokoena into the first-team fold, Pirates are showing foresight and continuity in their approach. This move echoes similar promotions in recent seasons, with players like Thabiso Sesane, Siyabonga Ndlozi, Boitumelo Radiopane, Nkota, and Mofokeng himself all emerging from the development structures to represent the senior side.

Although no official comment has been made by the club on Mofokeng’s potential departure or further signings, the promotion of Mokoena signals a broader plan to maintain depth and ensure long-term squad stability.

As the new season draws closer, all eyes will be on Mokoena’s integration into the senior setup and any potential moves involving key young talents. The Siya crew will continue to monitor developments around Mofokeng’s future and Mokoena’s progress within the Pirates camp.
