Questions Mount Over Flavio Silva’s Readiness as Kaizer Chiefs Pre-Season Struggles Continue

Kaizer Chiefs’ latest attacking signing, Flavio Silva, is already under scrutiny — and he hasn’t even kicked a ball in an official match. With the club preparing for the upcoming season, Silva’s pre-season form has done little to silence growing doubts, especially considering his modest track record in the lower divisions of Portuguese football.
The Guinea-Bissau-born striker has spent most of his career in Portugal’s second and third tiers, with underwhelming stints at clubs such as Benfica B, União da Madeira, and CD Mafra. Despite showing early promise in Sporting Lisbon’s U-19 setup, Silva’s career quickly descended into a journeyman path, including a spell in the Terceira Divisão — Portugal’s semi-professional third division — with SC Torreense.
Supporters have expressed concern over his fitness and adaptation, particularly following Chiefs’ uninspiring pre-season performances where Silva has struggled to make a notable impact. His most consistent run of form came in Indonesia’s Liga 1, where he spent two-and-a-half seasons with Persik Kediri and Persebaya Surabaya. However, the level of competition in Liga 1 is widely regarded as significantly lower than South Africa’s DStv Premiership, raising further questions about his ability to adapt to a higher standard of football.
Despite the skepticism, Kaizer Chiefs’ commercial and marketing director, Jessica Motaung, has called for patience.
“My take on the players is that this is pre-season,” Motaung said when asked specifically about Silva’s performances. “Players have to be given a chance whether they are coming from the youth or other teams or places. It is important they be given the time to really get to know the team and play with different players.
“The proof is in the pudding — let the players get on the pitch and do the work as the season progresses,” she added.
Motaung’s comments highlight a measured approach from the club’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of integration before judgement. However, with Amakhosi fans growing restless after years without silverware, patience may be in short supply if Silva fails to deliver quickly.
Kaizer Chiefs are set to face Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium this Saturday. That match could provide a better indication of Silva’s readiness to compete at the top level and whether the gamble on the former Indonesian league striker will pay off.
For now, all eyes remain on Flavio Silva as he looks to prove his worth and silence the doubters.
