Orlando Pirates to Miss Key Defender in Nedbank Cup Clash

Orlando Pirates will face a major setback in their next assignment following developments in their Betway Premiership match against AmaZulu FC on Wednesday. The Buccaneers are set to host Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 at Moses Mabhida Stadium, but they will do so without their first-choice centre-back Lebone Seema. Seema picked up his fourth yellow card of the season for time-wasting during the 2-0 victory over AmaZulu, triggering a mandatory one-match suspension. This suspension will force coach Abdeslam Ouaddou to adjust his defensive lineup for the upcoming cup fixture.

Seema’s absence comes at a time when Pirates’ defence has already undergone significant changes. Since arriving from TS Galaxy in the off-season, Seema has played 22 matches and established himself as the first-choice centre-back. With Mbekezeli Mbokazi having departed and Olisa Ndah also no longer at the club, Seema’s presence has been central to Pirates’ backline stability. His consistency has also put him on the radar for potential Bafana Bafana selection ahead of his 23rd birthday in April. Losing such an influential defender for the Nedbank Cup clash is a blow for Pirates’ defensive strategy.

The suspension opens opportunities for other players to step up. Nkosinathi Sibisi could see regular minutes again, a chance that had been limited prior to the AFCON break. Mpho Chabatsane is also likely to get game time, especially as Thabiso Sesane is only returning from a long-term injury. Tapelo Xoki remains sidelined with a long-term injury, making squad depth a critical consideration for Ouaddou. These changes will test Pirates’ defensive cohesion against Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, who will technically be the home side at Moses Mabhida.

Pirates’ coaching staff will need to adjust tactics to compensate for Seema’s absence. Defensive partnerships must be reorganized quickly to maintain stability and minimize risk in the Nedbank Cup. Despite the setback, the team will rely on its depth and emerging players to carry the defensive duties while maintaining attacking momentum. Ouaddou’s experience in managing squad rotation and integrating young players will be essential to navigate this challenge.

Seema will return to the squad for upcoming February matches against Marumo Gallants, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaizer Chiefs. His suspension is limited to the cup tie, meaning Pirates can quickly restore their preferred defensive structure. For now, the focus will be on balancing player rotation, covering gaps in defence, and ensuring the team remains competitive in both the Nedbank Cup and the league. The upcoming match will serve as a test of Pirates’ squad depth and resilience.
