Miguel Cardoso Silences Doubters by Guiding Mamelodi Sundowns to PSL Glory and Eyeing Champions League Triumph

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has firmly established his credentials after steering the club to their record-extending eighth Premier Soccer League (PSL) title in a row. The Portuguese tactician, who took over during a turbulent phase, is now on the cusp of completing a dream debut season as he prepares to lead Masandawana into the CAF Champions League final.

When Cardoso was appointed as Sundowns coach, many fans and pundits questioned his pedigree, with some critics quick to point out his lack of silverware. But the 52-year-old has always maintained confidence in his experience and coaching journey, citing his involvement in high-level football across Europe and Africa.

Reflecting on the criticism he faced when he arrived in South Africa, Cardoso recalled being overlooked despite a strong resume that included reaching the UEFA Europa League final as assistant coach at Sporting Braga in 2011. That campaign saw Braga eliminate European giants such as Liverpool, Sevilla, and Benfica before falling to FC Porto in the final.

Now, after guiding Sundowns to another dominant league campaign, Cardoso has silenced the doubters. His appointment came after the departure of Manqoba Mngqithi, who was sacked following an inconsistent start to the season. Cardoso brought immediate structure and tactical clarity, resulting in a strong run that saw the Tshwane giants reclaim their position at the top of South African football.

Under his leadership, Sundowns also remain in contention for the biggest prize in African club football. They are set to face Egyptian powerhouse Pyramids FC in the CAF Champions League final, with the first leg taking place in Pretoria on May 24 and the return fixture scheduled for June 1 in Cairo. A win would mark Sundowns’ second Champions League title, and the first under Cardoso’s leadership.

Cardoso’s tactical intelligence, calm presence on the touchline, and ability to unlock the full potential of Sundowns’ star-studded squad have earned him growing respect across the continent. His success also positions the club well for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off in mid-June.

From a coach whose appointment was met with skepticism to one now leading a team on the brink of continental glory, Miguel Cardoso’s first season at Mamelodi Sundowns is fast becoming one of the most remarkable debut campaigns in South African football history.
