Banyana Banyana will travel to New Zealand and Australia ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. There were very public issues regarding their bonuses ahead of the competition though.
This weekend the women’s team boycotted their send-off match against Botswana because of issues regarding their bonuses ahead of the showpiece competition.
FIFA will pay every single player $30 000 (approximately R570 000) for participating in the competition. Each association will receive $1.5 million (R30 million) for travel, accommodation, food and any other cost required for participating in the World Cup.
The Banyana Banyana players were concerned that the $30 000 which is designed for each player would be taken by SAFA, as their contracts did not specify this. Above and beyond the $30 000, the players demanded an additional bonus from SAFA.
This is where the Motsepe family has stepped in and donated R6 million to the playing squad, for qualifying for the competition. Each player will now receive and additional R230 000, on top of the $30 000.
“These are our champions, and we have to treat them as such,” Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe spoke.
“They gave their sweat and blood for country and it’s very important they get what they deserve. We must stop paying lip-service to things like equal payment and gender equality, we can do more.
“Banyana Banyana are going to the World Cup, and we should be proud of it.”
The ladies will depart the country later today. Patrice Motsepe Solves Bonus Row Between SAFA & Banyana Banyana!
