Maritzburg United begin their DSTV Diski Challenge season this Saturday. Head coach and former player Peter Petersen has been hard at work, preparing for the upcoming season.
The Team of Choice will host Sekhukhune United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday morning.
They began the previous season in outstanding fashion. Petersen’s team scored a flurry of goals.
Their Achilles heel however was their leaky defence. All the goals they scored were undermined by the goals conceded.
They have endured a stop-start period as they attempt to prepare for what lies ahead of them.
“Prep has been good, stop-start at times, but good in the main as we rebuild,” he said to the club media. “I think we’ve assembled a decent young squad and they’re working hard.
“They want to take the next step into the first team, so that makes our job a bit easier. They’re very motivated and I think we’re on the right track.” He added.
The youngsters have been motivated by the influence of first team head coach Ernst Middendorp. His presence helps the youngsters do even better than usual.
“Ever since the Head Coach of the club (coach Ernst) has come in, he’s changed everything for the boys,” Coach Peter explained.
“I think we have 12 youngsters training with the first team at the moment, with others who are in school, coming in and out, which is good.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to be exposed at a different level and it’s good for them to be training alongside those senior PSL figures in that main team.” The former right back stated.
