Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s Dominance Against Soweto Giants Set to Continue

Mamelodi Sundowns will make their way to FNB Stadium on Sunday for their 58th PSL-era league meeting against Orlando Pirates, and one player likely to be at the center of the action is Lucas Ribeiro Costa.

The Brazilian forward has established himself as a nightmare for both Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, boasting an impressive goal contribution rate that exceeds his total appearances against the two Soweto giants.

Ribeiro Costa’s Stellar Record Against Chiefs

Since his arrival at Chloorkop at the beginning of last season, Ribeiro Costa has made seven appearances against Kaizer Chiefs, contributing to nine goals. This includes four goals and five assists, solidifying his status as one of the most dangerous players Amakhosi have faced in recent times.

The 26-year-old has played in every match against Chiefs since his arrival, and should Sundowns advance to the semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup, Amakhosi will once again be wary of his attacking prowess.

Pirates Also Feeling the Heat

Pirates have not fared any better against the Brazilian’s attacking threat. In just four matches against the Buccaneers, Ribeiro Costa has racked up six goal contributions—scoring three times and providing three assists.

Notably, half of those contributions came in their last meeting, where he played a starring role in Sundowns’ dominant 4-1 victory over Pirates last month, scoring twice and setting up another goal.

Luckily for the Buccaneers, he was absent during last season’s MTN8 final, but his return for Sunday’s clash means Jose Riveiro will need to craft a tactical plan specifically to neutralize his impact.

Ribeiro Costa’s Unstoppable Form

One of the most remarkable feats of Ribeiro Costa’s season is his consistency—he has found the net in every match against Chiefs and Pirates this campaign. His presence alone will be a significant concern for both teams whenever they cross paths with Sundowns.

With another massive encounter on the horizon, Pirates will be desperate to find a way to contain Ribeiro Costa and prevent him from extending his prolific record. However, given his current form and proven track record, stopping him is easier said than done.
