Relebohile Mofokeng’s Overseas Future in Doubt as Transfer Windows Close

After being an unused substitute for Bafana Bafana during recent FIFA World Cup qualifiers, attention has turned to Relebohile Mofokeng’s club situation and his chances of securing a move abroad.
The Orlando Pirates winger, once tipped for a breakthrough overseas transfer, has struggled to replicate last season’s form. His dip in performances has been linked to ongoing speculation about interest from foreign clubs. Against both Lesotho and Nigeria, Mofokeng did not feature, raising questions about his readiness for the next step in his career.
Pirates have reportedly rejected offers from clubs including Minnesota United in the United States and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ettifaq. With the Major League Soccer transfer window closing on 21 August, opportunities in North America have ended for now.
Europe presents a tougher reality. The transfer windows in England, Italy, Germany, France, and Spain all closed on 1 September, ruling out immediate moves to the top five leagues. Previous links to Rangers in Scotland are also off the table, as the UK window has shut. Belgium, Austria, Croatia, Ukraine, and the Netherlands have also finalized their transfer periods. Romania, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic followed suit by 3 September.
That leaves limited options. Saudi Arabia’s transfer window closes on 10 September, giving a narrow window for a potential deal with Al-Ettifaq, who recently signed fellow South African Mohau Nkota. Beyond that, Israel and Portugal remain possible destinations. The Israeli Premier League’s window runs until 21 September, while Portugal’s Primeira Liga closes on 15 September. Both Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Haifa are believed to have shown serious interest, though Pirates have so far resisted.
For now, Mofokeng remains with the Buccaneers as they prepare for the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC at Mbombela Stadium. Unless negotiations progress quickly in the coming days, the 19-year-old may have to wait until January to revisit the possibility of a European move.
His situation highlights the fine balance between timing, form, and opportunity in international football. For Mofokeng, patience may be the key if he is to secure the right move abroad and continue his development at a higher level.
