Richards Bay Coach Backs Yanela Mbuthuma to Become a Top Striker at Orlando Pirates

Richards Bay FC coach Ronnie Gabriel believes Orlando Pirates’ new signing Yanela Mbuthuma has the potential to become one of South Africa’s most lethal strikers if given time and trust at the Soweto giants. Gabriel, who coached Mbuthuma at Richards Bay, spoke exclusively to the Siya crew, highlighting the 23-year-old’s mentality, work ethic, and goal-scoring potential.
“It’s the start of good things to come for him,” Gabriel said. “He can become a 15-goal striker per season for Pirates. He just needs the chance and the confidence to deliver for the team.”
Mbuthuma joined Pirates during the recent transfer window after impressing with Richards Bay. Across more than 80 appearances for the Natal Rich Boyz, he scored 10 goals and provided eight assists. The move to Pirates, a club with established attacking options, sparked debate over whether he could secure regular game time.
With Evidence Makgopa, Tshegofatso Mabasa, and Boitumelo Radiopane all competing for the lone striker position, questions arose about how Mbuthuma would adapt under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Early signs, however, have been promising. The striker scored his first goals for Pirates coming off the bench in the CAF Champions League preliminary round second leg, helping the team to a 4-0 win over Lioli FC of Lesotho.
Ouaddou has praised Mbuthuma’s attitude and potential, while Gabriel emphasized the need for patience and learning. “Pirates are a possession-based team creating numerous chances. He will score often, but he must wait for his time and seize the opportunities when they come,” Gabriel explained.
Gabriel also highlighted Mbuthuma’s character, describing him as coachable, hardworking, and humble. “He listens, wants to improve, and has the right mindset for growth. If he keeps that hunger, Pirates fans will see what we saw at Richards Bay.”
As Pirates return to action after the FIFA international break, Mbuthuma will aim to build on his Champions League performance and earn more minutes. Gabriel’s confidence suggests that with the right support, the young striker could become a key attacking figure for the Buccaneers.
“He’s only getting started,” Gabriel concluded. “Give him time and confidence, and he’ll make people talk about him for the right reasons.”
Mbuthuma’s early impact shows the potential for a smooth transition to top-tier football, and Pirates fans can expect to see him develop into a consistent goal threat in the coming seasons.
