Riveiro Set to Leave Orlando Pirates, Eyes North African Move as Zamalek Makes Contact

Orlando Pirates have officially confirmed that head coach José Riveiro will depart the club at the end of his current three-year contract, bringing an era of success to a close. His departure has sparked intense speculation over his next destination, with Egyptian giants Zamalek emerging as a leading contender for his signature.
Riveiro has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at the Buccaneers, lifting five trophies in three years and aiming for a potential sixth in the upcoming Nedbank Cup final. His tenure has elevated the club’s stature both domestically and on the continent, with a memorable run to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League further boosting his coaching credentials.
His continental success has not gone unnoticed, with clubs across North Africa — and even in the lucrative Middle Eastern market — now reportedly tracking the Spaniard’s next move. Among the frontrunners, Zamalek have already made direct contact, holding a Zoom meeting with Riveiro to explore a potential deal.
Although current interim coach Ayman El Ramadi remains in charge until the end of the season, Zamalek’s management is preparing for future leadership. Sources indicate that beyond admiring his track record, the Egyptian club was encouraged by the affordability of hiring Riveiro compared to previous coaches. Zamalek’s top coaching salary range is between USD60,000 and USD90,000 per month (approximately R1.1 million to R1.6 million), which is significantly higher than what Riveiro currently earns in South Africa. This puts the Spaniard well within financial reach for the club.
Historically, Zamalek have shown a willingness to invest heavily in coaching talent, with Portuguese tactician José Peseiro previously occupying the upper end of that pay scale. While the Cairo-based club has reportedly spoken to several other coaching candidates, Riveiro remains in the top five options being seriously considered — pending the final outcome of El Ramadi’s interim run.
Interestingly, high-profile South African coach Pitso Mosimane was not among those approached by Zamalek during their recent recruitment discussions.
As the 2024/25 season draws to a close, the spotlight will remain firmly on Riveiro. Whether he lands in Cairo, elsewhere in North Africa, or even the Middle East, one thing is certain: his next move will be closely followed by clubs and fans alike after a remarkable tenure in the PSL.
