Ronwen Williams Urges Calm and Confidence Ahead of Crucial Rwanda Clash

Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams has called on his teammates to stay calm, focused, and confident ahead of tonight’s decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium.

Speaking during Monday’s pre-match press conference in Nelspruit, the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper displayed his usual composure as he addressed the media alongside head coach Hugo Broos. Williams made it clear that despite the team’s recent frustrations, belief within the camp remains strong.

He admitted that the goalless draw against Zimbabwe last Friday was a missed opportunity but insisted that the squad is mentally prepared to deliver a strong performance. “Obviously, we know the situation. We would have loved to be in a different situation, but it is what it is now,” Williams said. “The boys know what’s at stake. We’ve had our talks, and all I can say is the boys are ready. They’ve got the belief, and the faith is still there.”

South Africa sit second in Group C, two points behind leaders Benin. They must beat Rwanda tonight and hope for a favourable result in the Nigeria-Benin fixture to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Williams said the team has accepted the pressure that comes with the situation and will approach the match with determination. “It’s just for us to go out tomorrow and once again show the team that we are, the team that we’ve been over the last few years. There’s no reason to doubt the quality that we have in the team and the progress we’ve made.”

Under Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana have shown clear improvement, reaching the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals earlier this year. Williams, who captained that campaign, has been a key part of the team’s rise, bringing stability and leadership from the back.

“Yes, we would have loved things to be a bit different, but it is how it is now,” he said. “The boys are ready to go again and get the job done. There’s still so much to play for. We know what needs to be done.”

Williams also stressed the importance of maintaining the mindset that has carried Bafana through recent challenges. “We know the points and how things work,” he explained. “So we’ll go tomorrow with the same belief, same faith, and the same mentality that we’ve had over the last few years, because that has helped us and has carried us through.”

The atmosphere at Mbombela Stadium is expected to be electric, with supporters hoping Bafana can deliver another spirited display to close the qualification campaign on a positive note. Kick-off is at 18:00.
