Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned DSTV Premiership champions last night. Head coach Rulani Mokwena has expressed his gratitude at being in his role.

Mokwena was announced the sole head coach in October last year, after a humiliating 3-0 loss against Orlando Pirates in the semi-finals of the MTN 8. This is after he was a co-coach alongside Manqoba Mngqithi since 2020, after the departure of Pitso Mosimane.

As the head coach, he is yet to taste defeat in the DSTV Premiership. In fact, he has only lost once in all competitions since being the sole tactician.

“Privileged, and if there is another word: honored. And if there’s another word: lucky,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV last night.

“I’m privileged, and I understand the magnitude that comes with the privilege, I’m extremely honored because I have the responsibility to lead an incredible football club. And then I’m extremely lucky, and that is through the grace of God.

“You know, when you fail a lot of times, you then understand [that] when you succeed it cannot only be about your strength, your own intelligence, there’s some divine intervention that works. At the same time, I just feel extremely fortunate that I’ve got an amazing group of players, I’ve got incredible support from this football club.

“From the board, the management, the chairman, the supporters. Over the years, a short number of years, I’ve grown a very thick skin. I’ve grown a very thick skin and I just pray that God continues to give us more strength to be able to lead this football club to even greater, greater, greater glory and this is only the beginning.” He added.
