Mamelodi Sundowns defeated SuperSport United 1-0 in the DSTV Premiership last night. Head coach Rulani Mokwena was pleased that his players displayed their other side.
Mamelodi Sundowns 1:0 SuperSport United – DSTV Premiership
The Brazilians were glad to claim all three points as this was a very tough game. Neo Maema scored the only goal in the first half, assisted by Cassius Mailula.
“Congratulations to the entire Mamelodi Sundowns family, congratulations to the players, they fought very, very hard,” he told Phumlani Msibi of SuperSport TV.
“Top of the table clash, number 1 versus number 2, so you can expect what we saw today, chances on both sides, quality on the pitch on both sides. Gavin Hunt hasn’t won 4 league titles by chance.” Mokwena added.
He was asked whether he expected the visitors to approach the game in the manner which they did.
“No, the only difference that happened was that [Thapelo] Maseko played with a left foot on the right and normally Gavin likes to have the wide winger to be able to deliver balls into the box. So [Ghampani] Lungu was on the left with the right foot and Maseko was on the opposite side.
“So, they played a little more inverted. Then we struggled a little bit with Zeida’s [Aubrey Modiba] position because Zeida’s position was for a winger, winger to go on the outside and deliver the cross and not for the winger to come inside and put the ball inside.
“So, we had to address that a little bit, and the centre backs needed to be 5 or 10 meters a littles bit higher so that they could provoke the press. But look, it happens, we are happy with the fight, we fight, we fight. One thing you can never ever, ever, ever, we play but we also fight. We pack a punch when the opposition requires us to pack a punch.” He spoke.
“And congratulations to the players, congratulations to the Masandawana supporters.” Mokwena concluded.
