Rulani Mokwena Praises MC Alger After CAF Champions League Qualification

MC Alger coach Rulani Mokwena expressed his admiration for his team following their qualification to the CAF Champions League group stages. Mokwena’s side advanced on away goals after a 1-1 aggregate draw against Cameroonian side Colombe Sportive. The result maintained Mokwena’s unbeaten record as MC Alger boss and confirmed his return to Africa’s premier club competition.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mokwena highlighted the challenges his team faced, including playing without the support of their fans. “We played the champions of Liberia, we played the champions of Cameroon, without the support of our fans in our stadium. It is a very big achievement for the club,” Mokwena said.

He credited the success to the collective effort of the entire club. “It is not easy, so congratulations to the football club, the players, the president—this one is for him—and to the medical staff who worked very hard. This is a great team achievement,” added the 38-year-old coach.

Mokwena also shared his perspective on winning the competition, emphasizing that the role of the coach is part of a larger team effort. “As coaches, we are the least important people in football clubs,” he said. “Sometimes, as coaches, we overplay or overhype our team. I try to help the club. It is an objective of the club, it is an objective that is very important to the president, and it is an objective that is important to the fans.”

He concluded by stressing the collective nature of success. “Unfortunately, I am a part of the club, and the objectives and goals of the club become mine, but it can never be an individual process. It is something the club, staff, and everyone involved wants to achieve.”

With qualification secured, MC Alger now focus on preparing for the group stage, with Mokwena aiming to build on the unbeaten start and make a strong impression in Africa’s elite club competition.
