Abdeslam Ouaddou Explains Makgopa and Mbatha Absences as Orlando Pirates Exit CAF Champions League

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has addressed questions surrounding the absence of Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha as the Soweto giants were eliminated from the CAF Champions League in the second preliminary round.

Pirates staged an impressive comeback at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit against DR Congo’s Saint-Éloi Lupopo to win 3-0. However, they fell short in the penalty shootout, losing 5-4.

The result left fans questioning head coach Ouaddou’s starting lineup, particularly the decision to leave out Makgopa and Mbatha. Neither player started, and both were seen in the stands during the match. Pirates also began the game without a recognized striker, with Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshegofatso Mabasa on the bench.

Speaking to the media after the match, Ouaddou clarified that the omission of the two Bafana Bafana stars was not due to injury.

“It was regarding the profile of the opponent and game,” Ouaddou said.

He explained that the tactical approach dictated the lineup choices. Pirates anticipated a low-block defensive setup from Lupopo and opted for a “false nine” to occupy tight spaces and draw the opposition defense out of position.

“We knew this team will come and adopt a very low block, so we wanted to try this false nine, someone who is able to keep the ball up front in small spaces and at the same time push the defence to be dragged out of position,” Ouaddou added.

He also highlighted the importance of squad rotation, noting the club’s busy schedule across multiple competitions.

“So, it was a tactical choice and, at the same time, we’re playing many competitions. We need a competitive team in a few days as well,” he said.

Despite the exit, the performance showed Pirates’ fighting spirit, with a remarkable comeback that fell just short. Ouaddou’s explanation underscores that lineup decisions were strategic, balancing tactics and squad management rather than reflecting a lack of faith in key players.

Makgopa and Mbatha are expected to return for domestic fixtures and upcoming continental matches, with the coach emphasizing the need for rotation and adaptability in a packed season.
