Rulani Mokwena Under Pressure at Wydad Casablanca Amid Poor Form

South African-born Wydad Casablanca head coach Rulani Mokwena is facing mounting pressure as he approaches two critical deadlines that could determine his future at the club. A string of poor results has put his position in jeopardy, with Wydad’s management set to review his tenure during the ongoing FIFA international break.

Mokwena’s troubles began when he temporarily left Morocco to return to South Africa on compassionate leave. In his absence, Wydad recorded their best winning streak in years, securing five consecutive victories, including a 5-1 demolition of Chabab Mohammedia. However, since his return, the club has struggled, going four matches without a win, including Sunday’s 1-1 draw against IR Tanger.

These results have seen Wydad drop to third place in the Botola Pro standings, two points behind leaders AS FAR Rabat. Adding to the pressure, their fierce rivals Berkane recently clinched the league title with five matches to spare, leaving Wydad’s supporters furious and demanding changes in the coaching department.

Mokwena Acknowledges Pressure as Wydad Management Meets

With frustration growing among fans, Wydad’s hierarchy is set to hold meetings during the FIFA break to evaluate Mokwena’s future. The 38-year-old tactician has admitted responsibility for the team’s slump but remains hopeful of turning things around.

“My job is to win games, and I’m not winning games at the moment. I have to take responsibility,” Mokwena told the press after the latest draw.

“Four draws in a row are not good for Wydad, and that is very clear. So, we have a very important break ahead, and we have to discuss a lot of things. Of course, I know one of those discussions will be about the future of the coach. That’s normal,” he added.

Mokwena signed a three-year deal with the Moroccan giants and insists he intends to stay for as long as possible. However, he acknowledges that results will be the key factor in whether he keeps his job.

Derby Against Raja Casablanca Could Seal His Fate

If Mokwena manages to retain his job after the FIFA break, he will face a defining moment in Wydad’s season—an explosive Casablanca Derby against arch-rivals Raja Casablanca. A defeat in this crucial encounter could be the final nail in the coffin for the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach.

“I will only focus on the derby after the FIFA break. For now, we have to see how we go forward,” Mokwena said when asked about the high-stakes clash.

As Wydad’s leadership deliberates, Mokwena’s future remains uncertain. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining whether he can weather the storm or if Wydad will opt for a managerial change in their pursuit of silverware.
