Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger Debut Delayed Amid Stadium Issues

Rulani Mokwena may have to wait until September to take charge of his first MC Alger match due to stadium unavailability. His opening league game, initially set to reignite a rivalry with Sead Ramovic, was postponed by the league. Both sides were missing key players participating in the African Nations Championships (CHAN), prompting the delay.

Further complications have emerged as the new Kharit El-Khalitos Stadium failed inspection by the stadium accreditation committee, according to Sportnews. This means fans may have to wait at least another week to see Mokwena, the former Wydad AC and Mamelodi Sundowns coach, lead the team.

Discussions have considered alternative venues. Some USM officials proposed moving the game to Mustapha Tchaker Stadium. Other talks have suggested Ali Ammar Stadium, with equal ticket allocations for both sides. The game is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, 31 August, pending venue confirmation. The Omar Benrahm Stadium has been ruled out entirely.

The postponement could work in Mokwena’s favour. He has yet to work with several key Algerian players on international duty. The delay allows him more time to integrate the squad, implement tactics, and assess players ahead of his official debut.

Both clubs have experienced scheduling challenges. USM’s previous game against JS Kabylie, coached by Josef Zinnbauer, was also postponed due to player unavailability. Mokwena’s fans will hope this delay provides the team with the preparation time needed for a strong start under their new coach.
