Thabo Mngomeni Backs Relebohile Mofokeng Amid Orlando Pirates Absence

Orlando Pirates legend Thabo Mngomeni has spoken out about the absence of young star Relebohile Mofokeng from recent starting line-ups, calling for patience and protection for the player.

Mofokeng, one of South Africa’s most promising football talents, has not featured in Pirates’ last few matches. The club has not released an official statement, but reports suggest the teenager may be recovering from an injury. His absence has sparked discussion among fans and pundits, with many questioning whether his form or fitness is behind the decision.

“It would be better if he is being wrapped in cotton wool and protected from whatever they might be shielding him from,” Mngomeni said. “He is one of the top youngsters in our country, so he should be playing week in and week out at his age. While his recent form may not have been at its peak, poor performances typically do not last long for such talented players. Unless there is something the club is not disclosing to us.”

Mngomeni praised Mofokeng’s natural ability and maturity, emphasizing that temporary dips in form are part of a young player’s growth.

“Personally, I don’t see a difference in his game – he is still a great player to watch. At the moment, he is a pivotal figure in our football here in South Africa’s PSL,” he said. “He may not play stylishly or engage in unnecessary dribbling. He could be experiencing a rough patch, which can happen to any football player, but that does not mean he has lost his talent. There’s no way someone as skilled as he is, can drop in form.”

Mngomeni also noted that coaching decisions may play a role in Mofokeng’s situation. “It may relate to how the coach is using him, but from what I can see, he doesn’t appear to be a troublesome youngster. I see him as a very humble boy who dreams of achieving greatness in his football career. I’m speaking from my own experience.”

Mofokeng has made 12 appearances for Orlando Pirates this season across all competitions, contributing one assist. Despite the recent setback, the 19-year-old remains one of the brightest prospects in South African football, admired for his creativity, composure, and vision on the ball.

Mngomeni’s comments reflect a wider belief that young players like Mofokeng need support and guidance during challenging phases. For Pirates, ensuring his confidence and fitness will be key as the club looks to maintain its competitive edge in domestic and continental competitions.
