Siphiwe Tshabalala believes that its important for local players to test themselves against the best in the world. The number of South Africans playing internationally has severely dropped over the century.
The best years of Bafana Bafana were somewhere between 1995 and the early 2010’s. During this period, the national team won AFCON in 1996 and played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments.
One of the reasons for this was the fact that the national team had a huge contingent of internationally based players. This included the likes of Hans Vonk, Rowen Fernandez, Lucas Radebe, Mbulelo Mabizela, Delron Buckley, Benni McCarthy, Shaun Bartlett, Steven Pienaar and so much more.
Nowadays, there isn’t a South African player in any of the top 5 leagues in Europe.
“There are bigger challenges, opportunities and platforms as well that also will test how good you are as a player.” Shabba spoke, as per FARPost.
“And the more you compete at the highest level, it’s the more you learn you as well know about how things are done and as to where you are in terms of progress as an individual. Also, you get to share the experience as well locally.
“So, I encourage players to play abroad, go and see the world, learn and have an impact. Come back and impart that knowledge.
“When we have good players playing abroad at the highest level, is it an investment for our country. That will also help our country to grow and also, you know, perform at the highest level and be consistent.”
