Siyabonga Mabena Faces Stiff Competition for Minutes at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns youngster Siyabonga Mabena may have to accept limited first team minutes as the club continues to strengthen its squad. Sundowns have been active in the transfer market, a move that has increased competition in attacking positions. The arrivals of Monnapule Saleng and South American winger Brayan Leon have added depth and quality on the flanks. This has placed added pressure on fringe players at Chloorkop, including Mabena.

The teenage winger started the 2025/26 season as part of the senior squad and received opportunities under head coach Miguel Cardoso. He featured in several matches before leaving to represent South Africa at the Under 20 FIFA World Cup in Chile. His early involvement highlighted the club’s belief in his potential. However, the situation shifted after his return.

Since coming back from international duty, Mabena has been a regular for the DStv Diski Challenge side. He has delivered strong performances and played a key role as the team pushes for the league title. His influence at youth level has remained consistent, showing maturity and confidence beyond his age.

Mabena has recently been linked with a possible move to Europe, with Austria mentioned as a potential destination. If that move does not materialise during the current transfer window, he is expected to spend most of the season with the DDC team. This pathway would allow him to maintain match sharpness and continue his development through regular game time.

Soccer Laduma understands that the Sundowns technical team believe breaking into the senior starting line-up will be difficult for Mabena at this stage. With experienced and proven attackers now ahead of him, consistent minutes in the DDC are seen as the best option to aid his growth. The focus remains on improving his decision-making, physical strength, and tactical awareness.

Despite the challenge, Mabena is not discouraged. He remains committed to making an impact whenever he plays and continues to work hard to impress Cardoso and the senior technical team. His attitude and determination suggest he still views this period as part of a longer journey. At Sundowns, patience and persistence could yet turn opportunity into a breakthrough.
