Stellenbosch FC’s New Signing Muzomuhle Khanyi Reflects on Top Scorer Honour and Why He Chose the Winelands Club

Stellenbosch FC’s latest acquisition, striker Muzomuhle Khanyi, has opened up about his excitement after being crowned the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) Top Scorer at the recent PSL Awards. The 26-year-old forward, who joined the Winelands-based club from Hungry Lions, also earned the prestigious 2024/25 MFC Players’ Player of the Year accolade, capping a remarkable season.

Khanyi netted 18 league goals last term, cementing his place in the record books. Including cup competitions, he scored a total of 19 goals, with his 19th coming in a Nedbank Cup match.

Speaking exclusively to KickOff, Khanyi expressed his pride in the milestone and credited his teammates and coaches for their support throughout his journey.

“Overall, I scored 19 goals last season, with the 19th goal coming in a Nedbank Cup match,” he said. “I’m definitely happy with my achievements; I’ve been trying to accomplish this for years. However, I couldn’t have done it alone, so I’m grateful to my teammates and coaches at Hungry Lions for their support.”

Reflecting on his career path, Khanyi highlighted his persistence and experience in the National First Division (NFD), having previously played for Cape Umoya and Platinum Rovers, before spending three fruitful seasons at Hungry Lions.

“Being the top goalscorer was one of my goals last season, so I had to seize the opportunity with both hands. It was my sixth season in the NFD,” he added.

While Khanyi anticipated the scoring honours, he was pleasantly surprised to be voted the Players’ Player of the Season.

“Even though I scored many goals, I can’t say I expected to be voted Players’ Player of the Season,” he admitted. “Now that I’ve joined Stellenbosch, I don’t want to put pressure on myself. I’m here to learn and appreciate the opportunity to be coached by one of South Africa’s best coaches, Steve Barker.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Khanyi is determined to fight for his place in the squad and make the most of his chances when they come.

“For next season, I will fight for my place in the team while waiting for my opportunity. When it comes, I will grab it with both hands.”

Khanyi revealed why Stellenbosch FC was his preferred destination for the next step in his career, pointing to the club’s playing style and youth-focused philosophy.

“I chose Stellenbosch because their style of play is similar to what I’m used to, especially with regard to counter-attacks. They’re also not afraid to give players a fair chance regardless of their age.”

“For the last four years, they’ve been playing with players aged 22 to 26, which influenced my decision to join them. They compete for every cup, and that’s another reason I chose Stellenbosch.”

With Khanyi’s proven goal-scoring ability and the trust of coach Steve Barker, Stellenbosch FC fans will be hopeful the new signing can replicate his prolific form and make an immediate impact in the top tier.
