Kaizer Chiefs Poised to Beat Mamelodi Sundowns to Feisal Salum’s Signature in Shock Transfer Twist

A major transfer saga in South African football appears to be nearing its conclusion, and in a surprising twist, Kaizer Chiefs look set to outpace Mamelodi Sundowns in the race to land Tanzanian midfield maestro Feisal Salum.
Despite earlier reports suggesting that Sundowns had tabled a more lucrative financial offer for the Azam FC star, fresh developments indicate that Salum prefers a move to the Soweto giants. Sources close to the player and Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that personal terms between Salum and Chiefs are believed to have been agreed upon, with the midfielder reportedly excited about the prospect of donning the gold and black jersey.
A key turning point in the deal came during a visit to Tanzania by Kaizer Chiefs officials. According to insiders, this trip played a significant role in swaying the player’s decision. The presence of head coach Nasreddine Nabi — who has deep roots in Tanzanian football through his previous stint with Yanga SC — is said to have been instrumental in aligning both parties.
“The visit to Tanzania by Kaizer Chiefs’ officials has changed most of the things concerning Feisal Salum’s move to South Africa. At the moment it’s believed that the involved parties concerning the player’s personal welfare and needs have been agreed upon. Apparently, the presence of coach Nabi in Tanzania helped that a lot. It’s as good as done as far as the player agreeing to join Chiefs is concerned,” a source told Soccer Laduma.
However, while an agreement appears to have been reached between Chiefs and the player, the transfer is not yet finalized. Salum remains under contract with Azam FC until June 2026, and Kaizer Chiefs will now have to negotiate a fee with the Tanzanian club.
“As much as the player and Kaizer Chiefs are believed to have agreed on their terms it’s now up to Chiefs to convince Azam with their offer. You remember Mamelodi Sundowns were believed to be in the forefront in as much as the higher offer for the player was. But with the player apparently agreeing to want to join Chiefs, it is up to Azam now to look at the offer and make their decision. But as for the player, he is believed to be willing to join Chiefs,” a second source added.
In a strategic move to sweeten the deal, Chiefs are reportedly open to offering Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari as part of a player-plus-cash package. Ntwari is said to be highly regarded by Azam, and his inclusion could be the final nudge needed to seal the transfer.
Salum, 27, has grown in stature since making the switch from Yanga SC to Azam, and his performances in midfield have made him one of the most sought-after talents in East Africa. His potential move to South Africa is seen as a major step forward in his career — and a major statement of intent from Kaizer Chiefs as they aim to rebuild under coach Nabi.
The club has yet to officially comment on the deal, but should it go through, Chiefs would be landing not only a technically gifted player, but also one with proven experience at the international level. Beating Sundowns to such a signing would also send a strong message ahead of the new season, as Amakhosi look to return to the summit of South African football.
