Sergio Dos Santos Believes AFCON Break Favors Orlando Pirates in PSL Title Race

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Sergio Dos Santos has weighed in on the Premier Soccer League title race, suggesting that the ongoing AFCON break could benefit Orlando Pirates more than Mamelodi Sundowns. With both clubs supplying the largest number of players to the Bafana Bafana squad, concerns have emerged about fatigue and the ability of these players to maintain form when domestic action resumes. The AFCON break has paused the league, giving teams time to regroup, but Dos Santos believes the situation favors Pirates.

Dos Santos noted that Sundowns face a tougher challenge with Pirates closing in on the top spot. “For a change, Mamelodi Sundowns, they’ve got a tough job because Orlando Pirates are on the chase and they are looking good, they are going to chase Sundowns all the way,” he said. He highlighted that Pirates’ squad is younger on average, meaning the players can recover more quickly from the physical demands of international duty. In contrast, Sundowns may struggle with fatigue due to a slightly older squad and the intensity of their campaign.

Dos Santos also pointed out that the title race is not limited to the two giants. Smaller teams in the league have shown competitiveness, with some punching above their weight in recent weeks. “Though we are looking at the two teams, there are two or so other teams still in the running. It’s good for our soccer,” he said. This competitiveness ensures that the PSL remains unpredictable, adding excitement to the season and increasing the challenge for both Pirates and Sundowns.

The former Chiefs coach added that the eventual progress of Bafana Bafana in AFCON could influence the league schedule. If the national team is eliminated early, the PSL will resume as planned, and clubs will need to quickly transition from international to domestic competition. Dos Santos emphasized that managing player recovery and rotation will be critical for clubs like Pirates and Sundowns in sustaining their campaigns.

Overall, the AFCON break presents both opportunities and challenges, but Dos Santos believes Orlando Pirates are positioned to gain the most. Their youthful squad, coupled with momentum from chasing Sundowns, gives them an edge as the PSL title race intensifies. For Sundowns, careful management and strategic rotation will be key to maintaining their lead and countering Pirates’ pursuit. The coming weeks promise to be decisive in shaping the championship outcome.
