Kaizer Chiefs Co-Coach Ben Youssef Admits Scoring Woes After AmaZulu Draw

Kaizer Chiefs stand-in co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has admitted the club faces a troubling challenge in front of goal following their 1-1 draw with AmaZulu FC at FNB Stadium on Wednesday night. The result marked Chiefs’ third straight league match without a win and extended a worrying trend that has haunted the Soweto giants throughout the season.
Chiefs have now gone nine matches without scoring more than a single goal in a game. Four of their victories came from tight 1-0 scorelines, highlighting a recurring issue with finishing. More concerning for Amakhosi is that they have failed to win any game in which the opposition has found the back of the net.
Speaking after the stalemate, Ben Youssef acknowledged the team’s struggles in the attacking third.
“I think we have the same problem now in the last third,” he said. “Every game we dominate, we create a lot of opportunities, even a penalty, but we don’t score. Today we missed a penalty, and when we did score, there was an offside decision. It was a bad day for us because we were unlucky not to score more.”
Despite the frustration, the Tunisian coach praised his players for their effort and resilience.
“The players showed strong mindset, strong character,” he explained. “The performance was very good, but we have to continue to work and correct our mistakes in the last third.”
Chiefs had their chances against AmaZulu, including a missed penalty by Makabi Lilepo, but they could not convert their dominance into goals. Mduduzi Shabalala netted the equaliser in the 32nd minute after Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya gave Usuthu the lead earlier in the first half.
Looking ahead, Ben Youssef pointed to the upcoming FIFA break as a crucial period for the team.
“It is very important for us, this break. We will get time to work, correct a few things, and recover injured players. We are not worried about the players in the team because the performances are strong. When you create a lot of opportunities, everything will come,” he said.
Chiefs’ next league test will be against Stellenbosch FC on Sunday before the international break offers the coaching staff a chance to refine their attacking play. For a club desperate to climb the Premiership standings, turning dominance into goals remains the most urgent task.
