Teboho Mokoena Reflects on AFCON 2025 and His Football Journey

Bafana Bafana star Teboho Mokoena has opened up about his excitement for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in a recent interview with PUMA. The midfielder highlighted the significance of South Africa’s return to continental and global competitions.

“Regarding AFCON, it’s crucial for Bafana Bafana to be competing again as it signifies a return to prominence in African football,” Mokoena said. He emphasised that the tournament not only tests players but also showcases the depth and diversity of African football. “It brings together diverse playing styles and cultures. The tournament often features thrilling matches, passionate fans, and emerging talent. The unpredictability means that underdog teams can surprise. I’m particularly excited to see how teams like Senegal and Egypt perform, given their recent successes and star players,” he added.

Mokoena also reflected on Africa’s historic performance at the 2022 World Cup, when Morocco reached the semi-finals. He believes that reaching a final will require sustained investment in grassroots development and player growth. “Morocco’s achievement in 2022 was historic, and to reach the final African teams will need to focus on developing grassroots programmes and investing in player development. Building a strong foundation can lead to more competitive players on the world stage,” he explained.

The Bafana star also discussed his choice of football boots. Mokoena wears the PUMA FUTURE 9, praising its design, fit and light weight. “The fit feels snug yet comfortable, allowing for great movement, and the weight is impressively light, enhancing agility without sacrificing stability. They provide the support and traction I need to execute quick turns and sprints while allowing me to express my creativity with confidence,” he said.

Mokoena’s partnership with PUMA extends beyond equipment. He described it as an alignment with innovation, performance and style. “Being part of the PUMA family signifies a commitment to innovation, performance, and style in sports. It’s about being part of a community that values both athletic excellence and cultural expression,” he explained.

Reflecting on his pre-game routine, Mokoena shared how lacing up his boots sets his mindset for the challenge ahead. “It’s that moment of preparation where I mentally gear up for the match,” he said.

His background has influenced his approach to football, blending instinct with tactical awareness. “It instilled a sense of community and passion for the game. It drives me to represent my culture on the pitch while embracing the flair that comes with it. Balancing creativity with structured play is key. Understanding when to take risks and when to play it safe allows me to express myself without compromising the team’s strategy. Communication among teammates is vital, allowing players to know when to support offensively and when to fall back defensively,” Mokoena explained.

Mokoena also reflected on his broader football journey, highlighting the lessons of resilience and teamwork. “My football journey has taught me resilience and teamwork, shaping my character both on and off the field. It’s about growth and learning from every experience,” he said.

Beyond football, Mokoena enjoys golf, appreciating the focus and patience it demands. “Playing golf can be a great way to unwind and develop focus, even if it’s frustrating at times. The patience and precision required in golf can translate well to football, offering a different kind of challenge,” he added.

As AFCON 2025 approaches, Mokoena remains focused on representing South Africa at the highest level while continuing to grow as a player and an individual.
