Thabiso Monyane Reflects on Kaizer Chiefs Debut After Move from Orlando Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs defender Thabiso Monyane has shared his excitement after making his competitive debut for the club in their 2-0 win over Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Glody Lilepo secured three points for the Soweto giants in their 2025/26 season opener. While Aden McCarthy claimed the Man of the Match award, Monyane’s assured display in defence was also a key factor in the clean sheet.
The 25-year-old joined Chiefs on a free transfer ahead of the new campaign, making the switch from arch rivals Orlando Pirates, where he came through the academy and spent his entire professional career until now.
Speaking to the club’s website, Monyane described the match as a special moment. “Oh my, oh my, it was an electrifying game. I really enjoyed it. I want to thank my coaches and teammates for believing in me,” he said. “The boys put in a shift and we’ve come away with three points. My first job is to defend, so I’m very happy with my defensive teammates for the clean sheet. For me, that’s a good day at the office. We aim to keep many more this season.”
Monyane acknowledged the rarity of moving directly between the two Soweto giants but sees the transition as a challenge worth embracing. “I see it as an opportunity for me because it is not everyone who does this. I am willing to give everything for this badge,” he said.
Chiefs will now turn their focus to their first home match of the season against Polokwane City at FNB Stadium. Kick-off is set for 19:30 on Wednesday evening.
Monyane’s confident debut suggests he could become a regular fixture in the Amakhosi backline as the club targets a strong campaign.
