Thapelo Maseko Faces Uncertainty at Mamelodi Sundowns Despite Promising Form

Thapelo Maseko’s situation at Mamelodi Sundowns remains uncertain despite recent positive performances. The former SuperSport United attacker scored for Sundowns’ DStv Diski Challenge side over the weekend, helping secure a 3-2 victory over Golden Arrows while the first team was away on CAF Champions League duty in Nigeria.

Maseko’s camp had sought a move during the last transfer window, but Sundowns blocked any potential loan deals. Head coach Miguel Cardoso had previously made it clear that Maseko would remain at the club despite these requests, even when the team was without key player Lucas Ribeiro Costa, which created opportunities for substitutes.

The 21-year-old has made four substitute appearances this season. However, the arrival of Katlego Ntsabeleng and Miguel Reisinho in attacking roles, coupled with the return of Kutlwano Letlhaku and Siyabonga Mabena from the under-20 FIFA World Cup, could limit his chances to feature regularly. Maseko risks repeating last season’s pattern of being left out of matchday squads.

Reports indicate that Sundowns may reconsider a move for Maseko in the January transfer window if he does not secure sufficient first-team minutes before the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December. For now, he must balance his performances in the development squad with the hope of breaking into the senior team.

Maseko’s situation highlights the competitive nature of Sundowns’ squad. Even promising players must consistently perform and adapt to changes in team dynamics to earn regular first-team opportunities. His next few months could define his role at the club and influence potential opportunities elsewhere.
