Thendo Mukumela Steps Up as Black Leopards’ Emergency Goalkeeper

Thendo Mukumela, known for his versatility as a defender, midfielder, and striker, has taken on a new role at Black Leopards amid a transfer ban that has left the club without registered goalkeepers.

The transfer restrictions have prevented Leopards from registering new shot-stoppers, including Lloyd Kazapua, formerly of Sekhukhune United and Chippa United. With no recognised goalkeepers available, Mukumela has volunteered to fill the position, demonstrating leadership and adaptability.

Mukumela made a notable impact against University of Pretoria in a 2-2 draw, showing confidence by coming off his line during set-pieces to clear danger. He also featured as a goalkeeper on the opening weekend against Casric Stars, when Leopards were forced to field only 10 players.

Head coach Joel Masutha praised Mukumela’s performances and willingness to step into an unfamiliar role.

“When you are young in the amateur ranks in Venda, you can play in many positions. He did that at a young age in the villages. So, when the situation arose that we may not have anyone in goals, he raised his hand to play there. We gave him the support and we told him that nobody is going to blame him. I am seeing some great saves from him. I am happy,” Masutha told Soccer Laduma.

Masutha added that Mukumela trained as a goalkeeper for only two days before the match against AmaTuks, highlighting the challenge he has overcome. “In the previous match (against Casric), he didn’t train as a goalkeeper. He only volunteered right there at the stadium. We have to commend him for that. Not everyone can do that. He never made one mistake today. It’s going to keep our normal goalkeepers on their toes.”

Black Leopards are working to resolve the transfer ban, aiming to register goalkeepers after the FIFA international break. In the meantime, Mukumela’s adaptability has kept the team competitive, providing stability while Leopards navigate a challenging situation.

Leopards will return to league action on September 13, hosting Upington City at Thohoyandou Stadium. Mukumela is expected to continue between the posts until the club secures registered goalkeepers.
