Tiyani Mabunda has not made a single appearance for The Brazilians this season. This is a far cry from the influential seasons he’s had in the past.
Over the past few years, Tiyani Mabunda has been one of, if not the best, defensive midfielders in the DSTV Premiership. He could win the ball back while providing technical quality in the final 3rd.
Mabunda was an ever-present in Pitso Mosimane’s Mamelodi Sundowns squad. Since Jingles departed for pastures new in Egypt with Al Ahly, Mabunda’s fortunes have also departed.
Mosimane was replaced with assistant coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena. They are supported by assistant coach Steve Komphela.
The trio of Sundowns coaches have opted for other options in the middle of the park. The arrivals of Mothobi Mvala, Haashim Domingo, and switching Lebogang Maboe into midfield has shunned out Mabunda.
The choice of the coaches cannot be questioned as they are in the running in all three competitions they are in.
Sundowns are big favourites to win the league title for the 4th consecutive year. They face Orlando Pirates in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.
They are also still in the running in the CAF Champions League. So Mabunda’s exclusion cannot be questioned.
Off the pitch, Mabunda has continued to exercise his spiritual beliefs. He is an avid fan of the much maligned Shepherd Bushiri.
