Benni McCarthy convened at Manchester United’s training camp after his holidays on Monday [17 July 2023]. He was warmly greeted by the players at the club.

It is no secret that McCarthy is one of the most adored characters at The Reds. In fact, wherever he has gone he has left quite a positive impression.

In addition to his infectious personality, McCarthy has also helped the team greatly since joining last season. In his role as the strikers’ coach, the club turned over a big number of goals last season.

No Regrets

AmaZulu FC Chairman Sandile Zungu previously expressed that he has no regrets in firing Benni McCarthy. This is despite the contradictory trajectories both parties have undergone since the sacking.

McCarthy went on to become part of the coaching staff at Manchester United, while Usuthu finished in a lowly 12th in the DSTV Premiership last season.

“The first season was great but the second was sub-optimal,” Zungu told Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“I asked him if he can commit to getting us into the top 8 and he couldn’t give me that confidence. It was a brilliant intervention to bring in Brandon Truter because we got to our first final in a long time.

“It doesn’t take anything from Benni and what he’s done for football in this country, but the results weren’t forthcoming in his second season, and I had to make the hard decision, but I have no regrets at all.

“I felt like there were people at the club who took you 5 steps back after making 10 steps forward. You have to make hard decisions in football if you want to succeed.

“I see now that they are making the changes that I wanted when I was there, and I would probably still be there and in charge of a very competitive team. When you don’t want to make changes because you have had success, you are making a huge mistake and that’s what happened.” The chairman eluded.
