SAFA Confirms FIFA Investigation into Teboho Mokoena Ineligibility Case

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that FIFA has opened an investigation into allegations that Bafana Bafana fielded an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Lesotho in March.

SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao revealed that world football’s governing body communicated with the association this week, notifying them of the disciplinary process now underway. Monyepao addressed the issue during a media briefing at a sponsorship launch event in Jabulani on Thursday.

“We have received communication from FIFA about the investigation they have launched in terms of the Lesotho match that Teboho Mokoena was fielded. We received it yesterday,” Monyepao confirmed. “So, we are preparing our response to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, which is ultimately required of us as an association.”

Bafana won the fixture 2-0, but if FIFA rules against them, the result could be overturned. Lesotho would be awarded a 3-0 victory, meaning South Africa would lose three crucial points. Such a penalty could seriously affect Bafana’s World Cup qualification campaign.

Despite the potential setback, Monyepao remains confident that Hugo Broos’ side can still qualify if they secure wins in their remaining fixtures. “We are not really worried about that. I think our focus right now is to ensure Bafana Bafana gets maximum points come October because whatever happens, whether there is docking of points or whatever, if we get six points come October, nothing else matters,” she said.

Bafana will next face Zimbabwe on 6 October before completing their qualification campaign against Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium on 13 October. Victory in both matches would leave South Africa well positioned to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

The outcome of the FIFA investigation will be closely watched, but for now, SAFA’s priority is on ensuring that Broos’ charges deliver on the pitch and secure the points needed to book their ticket to the global showpiece.
