Tshepang Moremi Emerges as MTN8 Hero After Overcoming Fan Criticism

Orlando Pirates midfielder Tshepang Moremi received widespread praise after his decisive performance in the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch at Mbombela Stadium. Moremi came off the bench in the second half and scored two goals in extra time, helping Pirates secure a 3-0 victory. Tshegofatso Mabasa scored the opening goal to complete the win.

Moremi, signed from AmaZulu FC before the season, earned Man of the Match honours for his display. His performance marked a dramatic turnaround following a difficult start at the club. Earlier in the campaign, a section of Pirates supporters, known as the Boo Boys, booed him after he appeared as a 71st-minute substitute in the MTN8 semi-final first leg against Mamelodi Sundowns. In protest, Pirates players had refused to celebrate with the fans after a 1-0 win over Stellenbosch in the next match.

Former striker Phumudzo Manenzhe lauded Moremi’s resilience on SuperSport TV’s Extra Time. “He shows a big heart. This is a player that the Orlando Pirates supporters were a little impatient with in previous games, where he was not getting the love he deserved,” Manenzhe said.

He added that adjusting to a big club like Pirates can be challenging for young players. “He needed a couple of games to adjust, and he did not adjust as quickly as the supporters wanted. The strong mentality he shows to block that noise, concentrate, and work hard in training is why he delivered this type of performance and results.”

Moremi’s heroics not only secured the MTN8 trophy for Orlando Pirates but also demonstrated the value of resilience and mental strength in overcoming early-season criticism.
