Kaizer Chiefs Clear Path to Register Khanyisa Mayo Ahead of CAF Return

Kaizer Chiefs have received a boost ahead of their return to continental club football, with the club now able to register striker Khanyisa Mayo for CAF competitions. The 23-year-old forward joined Amakhosi earlier this month on a loan deal from Algerian side CR Belouizdad.
The first registration window for CAF club competitions closed on August 31, which meant Mayo missed the opportunity to feature in the opening preliminary round. The second registration period, however, is open until September 30, allowing Chiefs to include the striker for the next stages if they progress. Mayo will not play in the first leg against Angolan side Kabuscorp this weekend but will be eligible for future matches in the competition.
Mayo’s agent, Basia Michaels, confirmed that Belouizdad requested a clause preventing Mayo from playing against them in the CAF Confederation Cup, but Chiefs successfully rejected the condition.
Chiefs earned their CAF Confederation Cup spot by winning the Nedbank Cup last season and will host the second leg against Kabuscorp at their home ground. The team faces added challenges as head coach Nasreddine Nabi reportedly parted ways with the club before the clash. Assistant coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef will take temporary charge until a permanent replacement is appointed.
The inclusion of Mayo strengthens Chiefs’ attacking options as they aim to make a strong showing in continental football, despite leadership changes and transitional challenges.
