Mamelodi Sundowns Reportedly Table R20 Million Bid for Stellenbosch Star Fawaaz Basadien

Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to be stepping up their pursuit of Stellenbosch FC’s highly-rated left back Fawaaz Basadien, with reports indicating that the Chloorkop giants have tabled a massive R20 million bid for the Bafana Bafana international.
Basadien, 28, has attracted interest from South Africa’s top clubs over the past two seasons, with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates also monitoring the defender closely. However, Sundowns’ financial strength could prove decisive in what appears to be a three-way transfer tussle.
According to sources close to the situation, the reigning DStv Premiership champions have emerged as the frontrunners to secure Basadien’s signature, as they look to further bolster their defensive options ahead of another campaign filled with domestic and continental ambitions.
“Sundowns are determined to sign Basadien. That’s why they are believed to have offered Stellenbosch FC R20 million for his services,” a Siya crew source revealed. “They know they have competition from both Chiefs and Pirates, but they stand a better chance because of the money they are offering.”
Despite Sundowns’ aggressive approach, Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly not out of the race. With the Soweto giants looking to strengthen their backline amid a squad rebuild, the Glamour Boys are expected to respond, especially if Basadien is sold to the highest bidder.
The former Steenberg United star has impressed with his consistency, defensive awareness, and ability to contribute in attack—attributes that have made him one of the standout fullbacks in the league this season.
In an interesting twist, should Sundowns successfully land Basadien, it could open the door for Chiefs to secure Terrence Mashego. The former Cape Town City left back has struggled for regular game time at Sundowns and may be made available as part of the reshuffle.
“If Sundowns sign Basadien, then Chiefs could have a chance to sign Terrence Mashego from Sundowns, as they are looking at releasing him,” the insider added.
Basadien has been integral to Stellenbosch FC’s solid campaign, playing a key role in both their defensive stability and attacking transitions. His performances have also earned him more national team recognition, and his stock has only risen as a result.
With Stellies looking to build on their recent success, losing Basadien would be a blow—but a transfer fee in the region of R20 million could be difficult to turn down.
As the transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on where the talented fullback ends up—Sundowns may be leading the race, but Chiefs and Pirates are still lurking in what could become one of the biggest deals of the 2025 off-season.
