Saudi Club Al Ettifaq Keep Door Open for Orlando Pirates Star Relebohile Mofokeng

The interest in Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng from Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq is far from over, with the club reportedly still keeping a foreign player slot open for the talented winger ahead of a possible transfer.

Al Ettifaq recently wrapped up the signing of Mohau Nkota but remain locked in negotiations with Pirates for Mofokeng, who has become one of the most sought-after young talents in South African football. Saudi outlets have widely reported on Ettifaq’s persistent pursuit of the 20-year-old, with sources confirming that initial bids were turned down by the Buccaneers.

However, the discussions remain alive, with Pirates reportedly holding out for a higher transfer fee and significant sell-on clauses. Mofokeng’s market value, according to Transfermarkt, currently stands at €1.6 million (approximately R33 million), although his performances suggest he could command even more.

Mofokeng enjoyed a breakout 2024/25 campaign, registering 12 goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances. Over the course of his Orlando Pirates career, he has amassed 40 goal contributions in just 89 matches — a remarkable return for a player his age.

His stellar season has not gone unnoticed. He’s among the top nominees for several major accolades at the upcoming PSL end-of-season awards, including Footballer of the Season, Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season, MTN8 Last Man Standing, and Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player.

Ettifaq, guided by their clear vision for youth and international talent, have been strategic in their squad planning. The Saudi Pro League allows clubs to register 10 foreign players: eight of any age and two under the age of 21. Nkota has already filled one of the U21 slots, but Mofokeng would still qualify for the remaining youth position. Currently, Portuguese youth international Joao Costa (20) is the other young foreigner on their books.

While only eight foreign players can be registered for league matches, all 10 can feature in domestic cup competitions. The club’s existing foreign contingent includes Georginio Wijnaldum (Netherlands), Moussa Dembélé (France), Jack Hendry (Scotland), Álvaro Medrán (Spain), Joao Costa (Portugal), and Slovak internationals Marek Rodák and Ondrej Duda — leaving room for Mofokeng’s inclusion.

With Al Ettifaq’s transfer strategy clearly accommodating the Orlando Pirates winger, the stage remains set for a potential blockbuster move. Whether a deal is finalized before the close of the transfer window remains to be seen, but the Saudi outfit’s ongoing interest signals they see Mofokeng as a key part of their future.
