Mamelodi Sundowns Move Early to Secure Grant Kekana with Long-Term Contract Extension

Mamelodi Sundowns are taking a proactive approach to ensure the long-term strength and stability of their defensive core, with plans already in motion to extend the contract of veteran centre-back Grant Kekana — nearly a full year before his current deal ends.
According to sources close to the club, the reigning DStv Premiership champions are determined to avoid the drawn-out negotiations that surrounded Khuliso Mudau’s extension by acting early in Kekana’s case. The 32-year-old Bafana Bafana defender’s current contract runs until June 2026, but Sundowns have reportedly tabled a new offer that would keep him at Chloorkop until mid-2028.
“They have a different approach for different players, and for Grant they are taking this approach to secure his future well in advance,” a source told Soccer Laduma. “He may be ready to sign a pre-contract in December and that’s what they are believed to be trying to avoid. It’s believed to be a two-year straight contract from July 2026 to June 2028, by which time he will be 34 years old.”
Kekana, who joined Sundowns in 2021 from cross-town rivals SuperSport United, has since become a mainstay in the club’s defensive line. His reliability, leadership, and composure have made him an integral part of the team’s domestic dominance and continental campaigns. In the previous season, he featured consistently across competitions, earning a nomination for Defender of the Season — a testament to his importance at the heart of the backline.
A second source revealed that the club’s offer is part of a broader strategy to reinforce and future-proof their defence. “They have already secured the future of Divine Lunga, Khuliso Mudau, Aubrey Modiba, and have long-term contracts with other defenders as well. Now they are intending to tie down Grant Kekana. That’s their plan of having a strong defence for a long time.”
Sundowns’ methodical squad planning has been one of the key factors behind their continued success in South African football. By moving early to lock in Kekana’s experience and leadership, the club signals its intent to remain competitive not only in the Premiership but also on the continental stage, where defensive solidity is often the difference between glory and heartbreak.
With Kekana likely to remain in the fold until 2028, Sundowns fans can look forward to seeing a familiar and dependable figure anchoring the defence for seasons to come.
