Luc Eymael Backs Orlando Pirates to Overcome Saint-Eloi Lupopo in CAF Champions League Clash

Belgian coach Luc Eymael believes Orlando Pirates have a strong chance of defeating Saint-Eloi Lupopo when the two sides meet in Lubumbashi for the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
The Buccaneers booked their spot in this round after crushing Lesotho’s Lioli 7-0 on aggregate. The convincing win showed their determination to reclaim continental glory and bring home a second star.
Saint-Eloi Lupopo, meanwhile, advanced after edging Sudanese powerhouse Al Merrikh 1-0 on aggregate. The Congolese side will host Pirates on 18 October before traveling to Orlando Stadium for the decisive second leg.
Pirates are currently enjoying one of their best runs in both domestic and continental competitions. Under coach José Riveiro, they have built a balanced squad that thrives on pace, control, and sharp finishing. Their home ground, Orlando Stadium, has become a fortress where few visiting teams survive.
Eymael, who previously coached Lupopo before returning to South Africa to manage Chippa United, says the Congolese club is not the same team he once led.
“They are not the same. They have lost their three attackers, and I see one of the best strikers is now playing in Tanzania,” Eymael told KickOff.com. “They are playing another system and not the same kind of football we played last season.”
The Belgian tactician believes Pirates’ tactical discipline and experience give them an edge.
“They have a big chance of beating Lupopo. They have developed a good brand of football,” Eymael said. “Their coach worked in Congo and was in charge of AS Vita. He is familiar with the conditions in Congo. He has played against Lupopo. We may never know what would happen in Congo, but Pirates stand a big chance.”
Eymael’s insights highlight a key advantage for Pirates. Riveiro’s knowledge of African conditions and his team’s current form could prove decisive in navigating the difficult trip to Lubumbashi.
If the Soweto giants manage a positive result away from home, they will be in a strong position to seal qualification at Orlando Stadium, where their attacking power and crowd support could overwhelm the visitors.
The Buccaneers’ continental campaign looks promising, and Eymael’s endorsement only strengthens the belief that this squad has what it takes to make a deep run in the Champions League.
