Luc Eymael Weighs In on Orlando Pirates’ Chances of a CAF Champions League Comeback Against Lupopo

With Orlando Pirates trailing 3-0 to Saint-Eloi Lupopo in the CAF Champions League, all eyes are on Saturday’s decisive return leg at Orlando Stadium. The Buccaneers face a steep climb to overturn the deficit and keep their continental hopes alive.

The first-leg clash in the Democratic Republic of Congo was not televised, leaving South African supporters in the dark about how the heavy loss unfolded. Despite their strong domestic form, Pirates were outplayed by a determined Lupopo side that capitalized on home advantage and familiarity with their artificial pitch.

For the second leg, Pirates must score at least three unanswered goals to force penalties or four to qualify outright for the group stage. Former Lupopo coach Luc Eymael, who led the Congolese club last season, shared his thoughts.

“Difficult, difficult! But you know in life, there is hope, you never know,” Eymael said. “Lupopo is used to playing on an artificial pitch. They are not used to natural grass. That’s the advantage for Pirates.”

Eymael admitted surprise at the first-leg result, noting that Pirates have been performing well in the DStv Premiership while the DRC league has yet to begin. “I was surprised because Pirates have been doing well in the league, but the league in DRC has not started,” he said. “But it will be difficult for Pirates to score four goals against Lupopo. I cannot say it’s impossible, but it will be difficult.”

The Belgian also pointed to the determination of Congolese players as a key strength for Lupopo. “I qualified them for the Champions League. DRC players are always very hungry,” he said. “If you see the conditions they play in, the pitches, the change rooms… it makes them tougher.”

Eymael explained that outside major cities like Lubumbashi and Kinshasa, facilities are often poor. “When you go inside the country, you play on natural grass but very bad,” he added.

Pirates now rely on experience, home support, and the natural turf of Orlando Stadium to stage what would be one of their greatest comebacks in continental competition. The challenge is clear: four goals needed, none conceded, and a place in the group stage on the line.

Kickoff is set for Saturday, and the Buccaneers will need every ounce of belief, precision, and resilience to keep their CAF Champions League journey alive.
